The Red Rose, on which Lancaster Brewery logo is inspired, is actually a Medieval symbol and heraldic device.

The origins of the Red Rose of Lancaster can be traced back to the gold rose badge of Edward I of England. At the time, other members of his family used variants of the royal badge, to identify their houses. Among the others, the king's brother, the Earl of Lancaster, used a Red Rose.
Later on, the Red Rose of Lancaster was used as badge of the House of Lancaster during the Wars of the Roses. As it can be imagined, the Wars of the Roses take their name from the colour of the roses – red for Lancaster and white for York – that each house used as their emblem. This legend took root after William Shakespeare and others wrote about it.

Henry Tudor (Henry VII), earl of Richmond and a Lancastrian, won the war by defeating King Richard III, a Yorkist, at the battle of Bosworth Field on 22 August 1485. In the portrait below he is, in fact, holding a red rose in his hand.

Following the Wars of the Roses, the marriage in January 1486 between Henry VII (House of Lancaster) and Elizabeth (House of York) led to the creation of the Tudor Rose, combining the so-called Lancastrian red rose and the White Rose of York. This floral union neatly symbolised the restoration of peace and harmony. As a brilliant piece of simple heraldic propaganda, the Tudor Rose became the national flower of England and is regarded as a symbol of hope, prosperity and unity.
